Celebrate the Carnaval!
Facilitators:Angela Myers & Glenna Rasco
Overview: Dance with me to the samba beat as we travel through Brazil, and taste their food, and speak the native tongue. Next, travel across the Atlantic Ocean with us to Nigeria to meet the Igbo people. Let’s dance to the Igbo rhythm, play a game of futbol, and discover the similarities in both locations and yourself as we go.

Activities/Experiences
Day One
- Research and discuss Brazil and Nigeria. Take a virtual tour of both. (included in lesson plans)
- Create a city of the future (detailed lesson plan for this activity)
- Discuss and play a game of futbol (soccer)
- Listen and discuss music from different regions.
- Learn the samba (use you tube video for this)
- Listen to drum line on campus
- Discuss importance of drums to the regions and create your own drum (detailed lesson plan for this activity)
- Research and discuss the melting pot. Students will use computers to research the concept of the melting pot and regions that are considered melting pots. View School House Rocks Video of the Great American Melting Pot. Discuss/write about how their own family is part of America’s Melting Pot.
- Rubber Hunt and learning about rubber trees and rubber products (included in lesson plans)
- Journal writing: At this point, what similarities do you have with the Brazilians and Nigerians?
Day Two
- Draw and write about comfort food (included in lesson plans)
- Prepare and cook meals and desserts from different regions (included in lesson plans)
- Listen to Nigerians version of English and Brazilian Portuguese. Discuss the pros and cons of a universal language and a tribal language. Discuss the importance of translators and career opportunities for translators. Enjoy speaking native sayings and share funny sayings their family/friends may have. If students are interested, have them create a brand new language.
- Briefly discuss animals in the African rainforest. Use these animals as inspirations for original crayon resist art work. (These were used as the parents’ invitations.) Crayon resist is achieved by drawing outlines and accents with a white crayon and painting with watercolors. The white crayon will show through the watercolor.
- Journal writing: What value does food, music, and dance hold within a culture?
Day Three
- Discussion and research on the Amazon Rainforest and its animals. Students will discuss ethical issues surrounding rainforest and deforestation. Students will write letters to stop deforestation and possible alternatives. (included in lesson plans)
- Have students write “Where in the World” commercials to show how much they have learned about Brazil and Nigeria. (included in lesson plans)
- Learn about the Carnaval and design their own costumes and masks. (included in lesson plans)
- Celebrate with parents and share all we have learned and explored.
